Stars sign Jamie Benn to eight-year contract extension

The Dallas Stars signed captain Jamie Benn to an eight-year contract extension worth $76 million that begins in 2017-18 and runs through the 2024-25 season, the team announced.
“The Stars are the only organization I know and Dallas is home to me,” Benn said in a statement. “In working with the Gaglardi family and Jim Nill, they have made it clear that they are dedicated to winning, and winning the right way. I'm happy to commit to that process for eight more years. My teammates and I value the passion and dedication that we receive from Stars fans and we're looking forward to getting this season started.”

Dallas recently announced Benn had undergone a surgical procedure to repair a core muscle injury, and his recovery time could be six weeks. While that mean he'll be ready ofr the 2016-17 season, he will have to be re-evaluated in his availability for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in September. Benn was among the preliminary 16-man roster for the Team Canada entry.
Benn is coming off a season in which he was second in the NHL with 89 points in 82 regular-season games. He also added 15 points in the Stars' postseason run.
He has 448 career points in his seven-year career with the Stars and his 192 career goals are the 10th best in franchise history.

He won the Art Ross Trophy as the League's top point scorer for the 2014-2015 season with 84 points, including three goals and an assist in the team’s season finale.
Dallas also signed Benn’s brother Jordie, a defenseman, to a three-year deal worth $3.3 million on June 24.
