Teens Alguetti, Zhang advance at US table tennis trials

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) Teenagers Sharon Alguetti and Lily Zhang won qualifying tournaments Friday night on the second day of the U.S. Olympic table tennis trials.

Alguetti, a 14-year-old from Tenafly, New Jersey, advanced in men's play by defeating Kanak Jha 11-4, 12-10, 4-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-9. Zhang, a 19-year-old former Olympian from Palo Alto, California, beat Ying Lu 11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5 in the women's final.

They advance to the North American Trials, which will be held in April in Markham, Ontario.

Alguetti, who's also a member of the U.S. junior boys team, lost to Timothy Wang in the final of the first qualifying tournament Thursday night before winning one on Day 2. Zhang was the youngest table tennis player at the London Olympics four years ago.

The U.S. trials continue Saturday, with a final player from each gender qualifying for the continental trials. Wang and Chen Wang advanced Thursday night.
