Moments before diving into the pool to anchor the U.S. men’s 4x200 meter relay team, Michael Phelps’s ripped his swimming cap.

Phelps was cheering on his teammates during the race, when he put on his cap and stretched it out. He pulled a bit too hard, and snapped it.

He would take Conor Dwyer’s cap, since he had already swam, and finish out a gold-medal performance by the United States.

Phelps picked up his 25th career medal, and 21st gold. In his fifth Olympic games, he has now medaled three times—he tool home gold in the men’s 4x100 meter relay, and gold in the men’s 200-meter butterfly earlier on Tuesday.
