Simone Biles tells Dancing with the Stars judges: 'Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals'

Simone Biles was asked to smile on Dancing with the Stars and her response was perfect.

Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles was not very pleased with how the judges received her Paso Doble routine on Dancing with the Stars.

After the performance,Julianne Hough said, "I don’t know if the smile is authentic because you want to smile, or if it's just because you rehearsed it that way. ... I really just want to see some rawness come out."

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba also commented on Biles' expression on the dance floor.

"You hit every line with precision and perfection," Inaba said. "But once again, I'm going to come back to performance and authenticity about who you are when you perform. ... You have this beautiful smile and you are a megastar with your energy, but once in a while, there's beauty without a smile. There's beauty in pain and all of the other emotions, and I'd like to see more of that."

Host Tom Bergeron added, "I was waiting for you to smile at some of the compliments, you didn’t."

Biles fired back saying, "Smiling doesn't win you gold medals."

Biles explained her comments more in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:

Anyone knows that telling someone else to smile is never a good move. Bergeron apologized for his comment on Twitter.

Biles is now in the Dancing with the Stars semifinals. The show airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
