LONDON (AP) — Two goals from Raheem Sterling ensured Liverpool avoided a League Cup slip-up with a 3-1 win at second-tier Bournemouth on Wednesday, while Tottenham eased into the semifinals with a 4-0 victory over Newcastle.
Lazar Markovic netted between Sterling's first goals since September as Liverpool won on the south coast. Progress in English football's second-tier knockout competition came after a demoralizing week saw Liverpool exit the Champions League and slip further down the Premier League.
Nabil Bentaleb, Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado scored in Tottenham's demolition of Premier League rival Newcastle.
Tottenham and Liverpool are in the draw later Wednesday for the two-legged semifinals alongside Premier League leader Chelsea and third-tier side Sheffield United, who advanced on Tuesday.
