Ghana's Asamoah Gyan out vs. Senegal with mild bout of malaria

Monday January 19th, 2015

Ghana captain and striker Asamoah Gyan will not play against Senegal in the Group C match of the Africa Cup of Nations after what the team says is a "a mild bout of malaria," according to the BBC.

The Ghana Football Association said Gyan was admitted to a hospital in Mongomo in Equatorial Guinea on Saturday evening and released on Sunday morning.

"The illness was detected at an early stage and Gyan is responding well to treatment," the GFA said in a statement on its website.

The GFA listed Gyan as doubtful for the match. Gyan has not trained for the past two days, and the BBC reports doctors are closely monitoring him to see if he will be available for future matches.
