USMNT defender Steve Birnbaum (knee) out Sunday vs. Panama

CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- United States defender Steve Birnbaum has a minor knee injury that will keep him out of Sunday's game against Panama.

Coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced the precautionary measure Saturday. Birnbaum made his U.S. debut last week in the Americans' 3-2 loss at Chile, playing right back. The 24-year-old Southern California native plays for D.C. United in MLS.

Matt Hedges, a defender for FC Dallas, could get his first start for the American men in Birnbaum's place against Panama at StubHub Center.
