Sporting Kansas City CEO Robb Heineman said on Twitter on Tuesday that he has spoken with Rafael van der Vaart, his family and representatives.
Van der Vaart currently plays for Hamburger SV but has also had stints at Real Madrid and Tottenham, among other clubs.
He has scored four goals in 16 appearances in the German Bundesliga this season. Van der Vaart is in the final year of his contract.
The 32-year-old has recorded more than 100 caps with the Netherlands national team and was part of the 2006 and 2010 World Cup squads. He was forced to miss the 2014 World Cup with an injury.
A recent report from the German newspaper Bild said Sporting K.C. offered van der Vaart a contract with an annual salary of $4.8 million. Heineman said that report was inaccurate.
Sporting KC is slated to open the 2015 MLS season on March 8 against the New York Red Bulls.
