Atalanta's German Denis suspended five games for punching opponent

Monday April 27th, 2015

Atalanta forward German Denis has been suspended five games for punching an opponent in the locker room after Sunday's match, a Serie A tribunal ruled Monday.

After Sunday's 2-2 draw against Empoli, Denis and a teammate entered their opponents' dressing room and Denis punched Empoli defender Lorenzo Tonelli, according to Reuters. Tonelli was also handed a one-game suspension for allegedly telling Denis on the field at the end of the game, "I will kill you and your family."

Denis scored the equalizing goal in the third minute of stoppage time and is Atalanta's top scorer. He will not be eligible to return until the final game of the season.

Both Empoli and Atalanta risk being relegated to Serie B. Atalanta is seven points clear of the relagation zone and Empoli is 11 points ahead of 18th-place Cagliari.
