An England own-goal from defender Laura Bassett in stoppage time against Japan in the Women's World Cup semifinal gave Japan a 2-1 victory.

The Japanese advance to the Women's World Cup final, where they will meet the United States on Sunday in a rematch of the 2011 final won by Japan.

Bassett was trying to clear the ball, but it deflected into her own goal after bouncing off the crossbar.

Japan and England traded penalty goals earlier in the match, and the game appeared set for extra time. But Bassett's goal, scored in the 92nd minute, gave Japan the victory.
