U.S. men's national team forward Clint Dempsey put the Americans up 1–0 on a brilliant header off of a deflection from Honduran goalie Donis Escober.
U.S. men's national team forward Clint Dempsey scored Tuesday night in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on a close-range header off of a rebound given from Honduran goalkeeper Donis Escober.
The goal came in the 25th minute and put the U.S. up 1–0 in its opening match of the tournament. It marked the end of a hectic post-corner-kick sequence in the box, during which Jozy Altidore had a go from deep in the Honduras box, only for Escober to make the save. The rebound he yielded popped right up for Dempsey, though, and the forward who lost his captaincy to Michael Bradley for the tournament reacted in time to head home his 42nd career international goal.
The two teams are vying for first place in Group A after Panama and Haiti played to a 1-1 draw in their opening match.
