Barcelona’s Neymar could miss Wednesday’s game against Bayer Leverkusen after sustaining a groin injury.
FC Barcelona forward Neymar sustained a groin injury while training on Tuesday, the team announced, and his status for Wednesday’s Champions League group finale against Bayer Leverkusen is in doubt. Spanish outlet AS reports that Neymar will miss the match, and his status for the FIFA Club World Cup is in jeopardy, as well.
Barcelona is set to take on either Club America or Guangzhou Evergrande in the semifinals in Japan on Dec. 17. The final is slated for Dec. 20.
The team issued the following statement, though it did not offer a timetable for his return:
“During the training session at the BayArena, Neymar suffered a slight groin strain in his left leg. His recovery will dictate his availability for the coming fixtures.”
The 23-year-old Neymar is on the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or with teammate Lionel Messi and Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo. He has scored 16 goals in 18 appearances for Barcelona this season.
