USA comes from behind twice, beats Iceland 3-2 in friendly
The U.S. men's national team kicked off its 2016 slate with a 3-2 win against Euro 2016-bound Iceland in a friendly at StubHub Center, with Steve Birnbaum's 90th-minute header the difference.
Jurgen Klinsmann's squad came back from a pair of one-goal deficits to earn the victory, with Jozy Altidore and Michael Orozco scoring the equalizers before Birnbaum, a D.C. United center back, secured the win off a set piece taken by Michael Bradley.
Jerome Kiesewetter, a standout for the U.S. Under-23 national team, came off the bench and provided a spark in the attack, and he earned the foul for the U.S. that set up Birnbaum's goal. Bradley delivered a pinpoint ball from the right off the free kick, and Birnbaum leaped to power home his header.
The U.S. had gone behind for the first time on a deflected shot by former Columbus Crew midfielder Kristinn Steindorsson in the 13th minute, as his chance hit off Orozco and beat goalkeeper Luis Robles, who made his first U.S. appearance since the 2009 Gold Cup.
Altidore evened the score in the 20th minute off a tidy passing sequence. Jermaine Jones sparked it from the center of the field in Iceland's half, finding Gyasi Zardes, who hit a one-touch pass to Bradley. The U.S. captain then found his Toronto FC teammate Altidore in behind the Iceland center backs, and he finished for his 32nd career U.S. goal.
Iceland re-took the lead in the 48th minute through Aron Sigurdarson, who beat Robles with a smooth curling effort from the left after the U.S. was caught napping on a quick restart after a foul.
Orozco leveled the score in the 59th, though. Altidore kept the pressure on for the U.S. after a cleared corner kick, delivering the second ball into the Iceland box. Birnbaum directed his header toward the goalmouth, where an unmarked Orozco tied the game.
The match marked the debut for several Americans, including defender Kellyn Acosta, winger Ethan Finlay, midfielder Tony Tchani and Kiesewetter. Jordan Morris also entered the match late for his first action since signing with the Seattle Sounders.
