England fans got belligerent in the streets of Marseille on Friday, fighting with French police ahead of their team’s debut match at Euro 2016.

England plays Russia in Marseille on Saturday, and supporters arrived ahead of time. It’s unclear what directly sparked the clashes with police. Tom White of the Press Association captured much of the chaos on Twitter as it happened Friday.

Things escalated quickly, with police donning riot gear and deploying tear gas, and fans throwing bottles.

Fans were also arrested in Marseille early Friday morning in a separate incident, the BBC reported.

The madness continued across the city on Saturday, as captured on social media.

There are reports that Russian fans have clashed with and attacked English fans on Saturday, as well.

England and Russia play Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. on ESPN and ESPN Deportes.
