During a shootout at the end of Sunday’s Copa America final, Argentina’s Lionel Messi badly missed his penalty try.
After Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero made a save on Arturo Vidal the very first shot of the shootout, Messi stepped up to take his country’s first shot. He struck the ball with his left foot, and sailed it well over the crossbar.
It was the first time Messi had missed in a penalty shootout during his career, according to the game broadcast.

Messi was left in tears, as he watched Chile win the tournament in penalties for a second straight year and remains without a trophy on the senior international level.
