Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo was knocked out of the Euro 2016 final against France after suffering a knee injury early in the first half.

The Real Madrid forward had just received a pass around midfield, when Dimitri Payet slammed into his left knee on a hard challenge.

Ronaldo immediately went down clutching the leg, and had to be helped off the field where he was checked by team doctors. He returned to the game, but went down again in the 18th minute. He continued to attempt to play through the injury after getting his knee wrapped by the trainers, but simply could not stay on the field.

Ricardo Quaresma came in to replace Ronaldo in the 25th minute, and the captain handed his armband off to Nani.

Ronaldo and Nani are Portugal's co-leading scorers at Euro 2016, with three goals apiece.
