Preki is has resurfaced in USL as manager of Saint Louis FC after his sudden departure from Sacramento.
When we last saw Preki, he was leaving USL's Sacramento Republic FC for an unspecified dream job abroad, but a year and a half and no opportunities abroad later, he has returned to the league he left.
Saint Louis FC announced Preki as its new manager on Wednesday, confirming a Monday report from the Davis Enterprise.
Preki, a former U.S. national team and MLS standout, guided Sacramento to the 2014 USL championship, which came four years after his previous coaching stint, which was in MLS with Toronto FC.
“This was not a decision I made lightly,” Preki said in July 2015, when announcing his departure from Sacramento. “The opportunity ahead is a lifetime dream for me and a chance to challenge myself at the highest level of the game.”
That opportunity, according to SI's Grant Wahl and Brian Straus, was supposed to be at a club in England that would be owned by friend and fellow Serbian-American Milan Mandaric. It was an opportunity that evidently never materialized.
Saint Louis FC could use Preki's guidance. The club finished second to last in the 15-team Western Conference this season, going 8-12-10. Preki also may see an eventual path back to MLS in St. Louis, which has been touted as a leader for one of the next cities for league expansion by commissioner Don Garber.
