Sprint car driver Bryan Clauson has died from the injuries he sustained in a crash during the USAC Midget Nationals on Saturday night, his family confirmed to the Associated Press.

The former NASCAR driver was airlifted to a hospital in Nebraska and was in critical condition before passing away on Sunday night.

Clauson was hit by a car after taking the lead in Saturday’s race. He then crashed into the track’s fence, and his car rolled down the track before being struck by another car. It took rescue workers 30 minutes to remove him from the damaged vehicle.

“Our Bryan fought to the end with the same desire that he demonstrated behind the wheel of all the various race cars he would park in victory lane,” Clauson's family announced in a statement. “However, we were more proud of our Bryan that took a moment to make a young fan’s day, or demonstrated his uncommon kindness and appreciation toward his friends, family and fans.”

Clauson, 27, raced in the Indy 500 three times since 2012 and attempted three Sprint Cup races in 2008 but did not qualify. He holds four USAC national championship titles.
