NHL cancels remainder of preseason games

The NHL announced the cancellation of the remainder of the preseason on Thursday in an official release:

The cancellation of the preseason schedule was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL.

The league and the players have been in a lockout since the CBA expired on Sept. 15. No preseason games will be played through Oct. 8; the first regular season games, scheduled for Oct. 11, are in jeopardy as well.

The two sides are scheduled to meet on Friday, although the Minneapolis Star Tribune's Michael Russo tweeted that talks would likely be extended:
