First-timer John Tavares has joined Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin as most valuable player finalists for the Hart Trophy, the NHL announced.

In his fourth NHL season, Tavares finished third in the league with 28 goals and 47 points while leading the Islanders to their first Stanley Cup playoff berth since 2007.

Crosby, the 2007 Hart Trophy winner who sat out the final month of the regular season with a broken jaw, finished tied for third in the league with 56 points. He had a career-best plus-26 rating while helping the Penguins win the Atlantic Division and No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
