Maple Leafs acquire Kings goalie Jonathan Bernier in three-player trade

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Bernier in a trade for forward Matt Frattin, goalie Ben Scrivens and a second-round draft pick in 2014 or 2015.

The 24-year-old Bernier was the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft, but has seen little playing time during his time in Los Angeles.

He was a hot commodity on the trade market for teams seeking goaltending help, with the Flyers and Wild also reportedly in the running.

Bernier posted a 9-3 record, 1.87 goals against average and .922 save percentage as the Kings' backup in 2012-13.

He was lost in the shuffle after Jonathan Quick emerged as the team's goalie of the future, leading L.A. to the Stanley Cup title in 2011-12, and requested a trade before the April deadline.

Frattin, 25, was the Leafs' fourth-round draft pick in 2007, and has played in 81 games and posted 28 points over the past two seasons, while Scrivens, 26, went 7-9 with a 2.69 GAA as the team's backup in 2012-13.

Bernier, a restricted free agent who had requested a trade, told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun that going to Toronto -- which reached the playoffs for the first time since 2004 -- is "a great challenge."

25-year-old James Reimer served as the Leafs' starter this past season, posting a 2.46 GAA and .924 save percentage.
