The NHL suspended Dallas Stars forward Ryan Garbutt for five games without pay for charging Anaheim Ducks forward Dustin Penner during Sunday's game, the league announced Wednesday.

Garbutt will forfeit $14,743.60 in salary and miss home games against Calgary, Winnipeg, road games at Buffalo and Montreal and a home game against Colorado on Nov. 1.

Garbutt attended an in-person hearing with the league and they could have suspended him for more games if they wanted to.

The incident occurred at 6:28 of the first period of the Stars' 6-3 loss to the Ducks. No penalty was assessed on the play.
