The Texans have hired Romeo Crennel to serve under new head coach Bill O'Brien as the team's defensive coordinator, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com.

Crennel, 66, didn't coach this season after he was fired as head coach of the Chiefs in 2012. He went 4-15 in Kansas City after taking over for Todd Haley, and he was 24-40 in four seasons as head coach of the Browns.

Crennel, who agreed to a three-year deal with Houston, had success in his last stint as a defensive coordinator, winning three Super Bowls in four seasons with the Patriots.

He takes over a Texans defense that was tied for 24th in the league with 26.8 points allowed per game.
