Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin is leaving his current position to become the head coach of the University of California Golden Bears, Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour has confirmed.

Martin was hired by the Volunteers in 2011 and led them to the Sweet Sixteen of this year's NCAA tournament.

Many schools had reportedly shown interest in Martin after the team's deep tourney run, despite what many at Tennessee felt was a disappointing 24-13 record in the regular season.

SI WIRE: Willie Cauley-Stein will return to Kentucky for junior season

Martin will be replacing Mike Montgomery, who retired this offseason after six years as Golden Bears coach.
