Southern Miss hires Doc Sadler as basketball coach

Southern Mississippi hired Doc Sadler as its next basketball coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Sadler replaces Donnie Tyndall, who left last week to accept the coaching position at the University of Tennessee. Last season, Southern Mississippi won 29 games, but lost in the NIT quarterfinals for the second straight year.

Sadler compiled a 101-89 record in six seasons at Nebraska, leaving the school two years ago. He also spent two seasons at UTEP, leading the Miners to the NCAA Tournament in his first season at the school.

"We've hired one of the great coaches in America and a perfect match for Southern Miss in Doc Sadler, " Southern Miss athletic director Bill McGillis said. "He is universally respected by his peers and regarded as one of the great coaching minds and recruiters in the country. Importantly, he will be a magnificent fit in our community. Our students, faculty, alumni and fans will love his engaging and genuine personality."

Sadler spent last season as an assistant on Iowa State's staff.
