Report: Royals' Yordano Ventura will undergo an MRI for elbow pain

Kansas City Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura will get an MRI on Tuesday to determine the cause of his "lateral elbow discomfort," the Kansas City Star reports.

Ventura, 22, left in the third inning of his start against the Astros on Monday after giving up five runs in 2 2/3 innings. The rookie, whose fastball usually runs close to 100 miles per hour, was throwing fastballs as slowly as 91 mph.

From the Kansas City Star:

"He spoke with trainer Kyle Turner for a few moments. He used his jersey to wipe the sweat off his brow. Turner motioned to manager Ned Yost, and departed the mound with the 22-year-old. The subsequent ovation was muted, a stunned near-silence inside a packed Kauffman Stadium."

The injury was a reminder of the many pitchers who have gone down this season. Season-ending Tommy John surgery has sidelined plenty of pitchers, including Marlins ace Jose Fernandez.

Ventura is 2-4 with a 2.80 ERA in nine starts this season.
