Adam Silver on Game 1 air conditioning fiasco: 'Not one of my prouder moments'

Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat tipped off without the additional temperature surge that marred the final half of Game 1. The Spurs had fixed their air conditioning issues in time for tipoff, which was welcome news for NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

“I would say it’s certainly not one of my prouder moments in my short tenure as commissioner, but it’s the nature of the game,” Silver told reporters at the AT&T Center before Game 2, according to the San Antonio Express News. “There always are going to be human and mechanical errors, and it’s unfortunate.”

Silver said the league was notified about a potential problem before Game 1's tipoff, but it was not publicly announced until the third quarter of the game. Temperatures rose above 90 degrees in the arena in Game 1, in which the Heat blew a late fourth-quarter lead as star LeBron James sat on the bench due to cramps.

Despite the air conditioning fiasco, Silver said he doesn't think this series will be remembered for that moment.

“I’m glad that this isn’t single elimination. It’s the best of seven,” he said. “So it’s too early to say how these Finals will be remembered. My sense is that having been a part of the league for a long time, that there will be all kinds of great moments.”
