Brazil's Luiz Felipe Scolari resigns
Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has resigned following the team's fourth-place finish in the World Cup, the BBC reports via Brazilian network Globo TV.
Scolari's contract ended after the tournament, but Brazil's soccer federation will reportedly accept the resignation anyway. The 65-year-old coached Brazil to a 2002 World Cup title. He left the program for several other coaching jobs, including a stint with Portugal's national team, before returning to Brazil in 2012.
He described the loss to Germany as "the worst day of my life."
After winning Group A, Brazil's fortunes changed when star Neymar was injured in the quarterfinal and ruled out for the tournament. In the semifinal against eventual champion Germany, Brazil suffered a historic 7-1 defeat. In the third-place game, Brazil lost 3-0 against The Netherlands, prompting boos from the home crowd.
