German politicians question suitability of 2018 World Cup

Several German politicians questioned Russia’s suitability to host the 2018 World Cup and even raised the issue of stripping the country of its hosting duties due to the downing of an airplane over Ukraine.

Last week, 298 people were killed when Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down. The Netherlands' football association said it was too early to review Russia’s hosting of the World Cup.

FIFA is investigating if winning bids for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 tournament in Qatar were ensured via bribery. They announced that report should be delivered in September and won’t be made public.

“FIFA should think about whether Moscow is an appropriate host if it can’t even guarantee safe airways,” Michael Fuchs, deputy head of the conservative bloc in the German parliament, told Handelsblatt Online, via the Guardian.

Fuchs said that Germany and France could take over the tournament if needed.
