Manchester United has agreed to a £59.7m ($98.9 million) transfer fee to acquire Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid, United announced Tuesday.

It is the highest transfer fee in British soccer history. Di Maria, 26, helped lead Real Madrid to the Champions League title in May after tallying four goals and 17 assists in 27 matches last season.

The contract is for five years. Di Maria said he only would have left Real Madrid for Old Trafford:

"I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for."

Di Maria scored one goal for Argentina during the 2014 World Cup.

The transfer represents nearly half of United's £130.7m offseason spending. Last week, United agreed to acquire Argentine defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon.

United is winless after its first two Premier League games under new manager Louis van Gaal, who said the team's start is "not good enough."
