U.S. winger Brek Shea has joined League Championship club Birmingham City on an emergency loan from Stoke City, the team announced Thursday.

Shea will join the team before its game against Leeds United on Saturday and can stay through Birmingham City's game against Reading on Dec. 13.

Shea, 24, has found limited playing time ever since his transfer to Stoke City from MLS in January 2013, appearing in just three games for the Premier League club. He was loaned to the Championship's Barnsley last January but saw his term cut short after a post-match confrontation with Barnsley fans in March.

After the most recent transfer window closed without a move, Shea's only option to join another club was a loan to a Championship team, and he'll join fellow U.S. internationals Jonathan Spector and Will Packwood at St. Andrew's Stadium.

Shea, who began his career with MLS's FC Dallas, has also earned 27 caps for the U.S. national team, including an appearance in its friendly against the Czech Republic on Sept. 3.

Birmingham City is 1-2-2 so far this season in England's second tier.
