Americans abroad: Boyd, Kljestan get on scoresheet; Johannsson debuts

The Americans Abroad scene isn't exactly teeming with standout performances lately, but midweek cup action marked a number of positive milestones for foreign-based played in the U.S. national team picture.

The highlight of the bunch has to be forward Terrence Boyd, who scored Red Bull Leipzig's third and final goal in a dramatic 3-1 comeback win in extra time over FC Erzgebirge Aue in the DFB-Pokal. Boyd's goal came on a header in the 108th minute off an assist from Dominik Kaiser.

Sacha Kljestan got on the scoresheet as well in league play for RSC Anderlecht, scoring what would become the game-winner vs. Kortrijk in the 85th minute to make the score 3-1 (Kortrijk would later score in stoppage time).

Elsewhere, Fabian Johnson came on as an 86th-minute substitute for Thorgan Hazard as BorussiaMonchengladbach defeated Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal. Timmy Chandler made the match day squad but did not get off the bench for Frankfurt.

Similarly to Chandler, on-loan Julian Green stayed on the bench for Hamburger SV's 3-1 loss in the cup to his parent club Bayern Munich,

Meanwhile in Holland, striker Aron Johansson made his long-awaited return from offseason ankle surgery in AZ Alkmaar's 5-0 win over GVVV Veenendaal in the Ditch Cup. Johannsson did not score in the rout, however, and was substituted off in favor of Viktor Elm in the 62nd minute.

In England, Geoff Cameron started and played 73 minutes in central midfield in Stoke City's 3-2 League Cup loss to Southampton. Cameron was replaced by Charlie Adam.

In Tuesday action, Emmerson Hyndman started and played the full 90 for Fulham as it was knocked out of the League Cup with a 5-2 loss to Derby County, and defender John Brooks played all 120 minutes of Hertha Berlin's 0-0 draw with ArminiaBielefeld. However, Brooks couldn't help his club in the penalty shootout as it lost 4-2.
