Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm suffered a fractured ankle during training and will be out for three months, the club announced Tuesday.

The team said Lahm will need surgery to repair the ankle.

According to EuroSport, Lahm was seen on the ground screaming in pain after injuring his right ankle at the team's complex and had to be taken away from the field in a golf cart.

Lahm, 31, helped Germany capture the World Cup last summer, but soon after retired from international competition. Lahm, who has been deployed in a midfield role this season, has scored two goals on 18 shots and recorded five assists in 24 appearances.

Bayern Munich has collected 27 points through 11 Bundesliga matches, good for first in the league. They also lead Group E of the Champions League by eight points through four matches.

Bayern plays Hoffenheim this Saturday when club play resumes. The club will take on Manchester City in a Champions League match next week.
