Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has suffered a new thigh injury, the club announced Wednesday. The Guardian's Andy Hunter reports Sturridge is expected to miss six weeks, a timeline that would leave him sidelined until the start of the new year.

Sturridge injured his hamstring in early September while on international duty with England. He strained a calf muscle in October while nearing a comeback. Last week, Sturridge returned to training for the first time since the initial injury. He has not played since an Aug. 31 match against Tottenham.

Sturridge was second in the Premier League last season with 21 goals, behind teammate Luis Suarez. Suarez was sold to Barcelona this summer and Liverpool has struggled to find a replacement. The team has managed only 14 goals in 11 league games this season. Strikers Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini and Mario Balotelli have not scored a single goal.
