New York City FC has acquired defender Josh Williams from the Columbus Crew in exchange for allocation money, the team announced on Monday.

The 26-year-old Williams, an Ohio native, has played his entire five-year career with the Crew following a four-year college career at Cleveland State.

“This is a huge moment in my career.  I’ve been with Columbus for four seasons and have loved my time there. Columbus was the team I watched while growing up, but to have the opportunity to take on a new challenge at New York City FC is very special and I consider it a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis said Williams' ability to play multiple positions for the expansion club next season will be significant.

“Having versatile players like Josh is very important,” said head coach Jason Kreis. "Josh could realistically play a number of positions along the back line. When you’re building a new roster this is a real benefit for a coach.”

Williams, the eighth player NYCFC has acquired, joins a roster highlighted by David Villa and Frank Lampard.

NYCFC will take part in the expansion draft along with Orlando City on Wednesday ahead of their inaugural seasons in 2015.
