The Orlando City Soccer Club announced the transfer of midfielder Brek Shea from Stoke City of the English Premier League on Friday.

Shea last played in Major League Soccer in 2012 with FC Dallas but made only five appearances with Stoke City since signing with the club in January 2013. He has also been on loan with Barnsley and Birmingham City during his time away from MLS.

Shea, 24, played for FC Dallas from 2008 to 2012, appearing in 98 regular season matches. He was a finalist for MLS Most Valuable Player in 2011 after scoring 11 goals and four assists.

"I really enjoyed my training stint here in the summer and I wanted to make that permanent,” Shea said. "I wanted to come home and I felt like this was the right place and will be for a long time."

Shea did play for the U.S. men's national team in September, but wasn’t a part of this summer’s World Cup squad.

Orlando City will begin its inaugural season in MLS against the league’s other expansion franchise, New York City FC, on March 8.
