The agent for Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo defended his client saying that criticism for Ronaldo throwing a birthday party after Saturday’s match is unfair.

Following Real’s 4-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid on Saturday, Spanish sports newspaper Marca conducted a poll in which Ronaldo was voted the worst Real player. It was Ronaldo’s first game since being suspended two games for kicking an opponent.

Following the game, Ronaldo celebrated his 30th birthday, but his agent, Jorge Mendes, insists that Ronaldo was not happy about the result of the match.

“He [Ronaldo] was very angry,” Mendes told the Spanish radio station Cadena SER, via the Guardian. “Any player that loses a game and more so, Ronaldo, who is a great professional, who continues to be the best professional in the world, would be angry.”

Mendes said that the party for Ronaldo was organized over a month ago and he did not want to disappoint people that came into town to attend.

A video that showed Ronaldo enjoying himself at the party, further fueled the criticism.

“What is inadmissible is that somebody takes advantage of a private affair to release a video. Ronaldo was devastated after the defeat and people spent two hours trying to cheer him up.” Mendes said.

Ronaldo, the reigning two-time FIFA World Player of the Year, leads La Liga with 28 goals. He also has nine assists in 19 games for Real Madrid, who lead the Spanish League by one point over Barcelona.

Real Madrid next takes on Deportivo on Saturday.
