Atlético Madrid has signed head coach Diego Simeone to a contract extension, keeping him with the club until the 2020 season, the team announced.

Simeone has been Atlético Madrid’s coach since 2011, leading the club to the 2012 Europa League crown and the 2013-14 La Liga title.

Atlético was the runner-up in the 2014 Champions League and will face defending champion Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarterfinals on April 14.

"It's an important moment for the club and for the technical team," Simeone said at news conference on Tuesday. "We've worked hard to secure this stability that we currently have. I have full trust in my staff and they give me the strength to carry on.

Atlético Madrid is fourth in La Liga with 59 points this season, nine points behind leader Barcelona.

“Fortunately I've been able to make this decision as I see a club that is moving forward, I see eagerness to grow and people willing to collaborate,” he said. "We all love Atletico Madrid, and we all want to grow together. We all have a responsibility, hard work, nerves and fear.”
