U.S. women's national team midfielder Megan Rapinoe glanced a ball off an Australian defender and into the net to put the U.S. up 1–0 early on in Monday's Women's World Cup match.
Rapinoe battled knee injuries that kept her out of warm-up games leading into the World Cup, but appeared to have no problem navigating through traffic around the 11-minute mark of the first half. She took a ball down in traffic, settled in the face of multiple defenders and laced a shot that hit off a defender and into the far netting for the opener.
The native Californian will also try to help the U.S. navigate through a tricky Group D that includes Sweden and Nigeria, along with the Matildas.
