Brazil legend Zico intends to stand in special FIFA election

Brazil soccer legend Zico announced Wednesday that he intends to run in FIFA's special presidential election following the resignation of Sepp Blatter.

Former Brazil soccer player Zico announced Wednesday that he intends to run in FIFA's special presidential election following the resignation of Sepp Blatter, according to AFP.

Blatter announced on June 2 that he will resign from his position, just days after he won reelection to a fifth term. The resignation came amid a corruption scandal rocking FIFA. 

The special election to name Blatter's successor will not be held until at least four months from now.

Zico said it is “sad” to see what is happening with the sport of soccer right now and said certain rules need to change. 

“I see it as my duty to use my experience and knowledge to try and stand for the presidency,” Zico said.

Last week, it was announced that Prince Ali bin-Al Hussein of Jordan and former French soccer player David Ginola intend to run​ for the FIFA presidency as well. Prince Ali was defeated by Blatter in the May 29 election.

A British bookmaker has pegged UEFA president Michel Platini as the favorite to replace Blatter.
