USWNT forward Abby Wambach missed a penalty kick early in the second half Monday of the Americans' round-of-16 game Monday following a red card that saw Colombia goalkeeper Catalina Perez get sent off.

Perez slide-tackled the USWNT's Alex Morgan just inside the box as Morgan raced to catch up to the ball. Stefany Castaño came on in place of Perez, who was starting because No. 1 goalkeeper Sandra Sepulveda was suspended for the match.

Castaño guessed incorrectly, but Wambach, opting to kick left-footed, shanked her attempt wide of the left post. In doing so, she missed a chance to tie Brazil icon Marta's all-time record of 15 Women's World Cup goals. Fortunately for Wambach, Morgan scored minutes later, and the U.S. went on to win 2–0 over its 10-woman opposition.
