Tuesday's Women's World Cup semifinal between the United States and Germany set an American television ratings record, Fox announced Wednesday.

The game's average audience was 8.4 million viewers, the largest for a men's or women's World Cup semifinal and the third-largest ever for women's soccer match of any variety. Only the 1999 and 2011 Women's World Cup final drew more viewers for a women's match.

Tuesday's game drew 2.5 million more viewers than the Germany-Italy Men's World Cup semifinal in 2006, previously the most-viewed semifinal match.
