Moments after the U.S. men's national team missed a golden chance to take a lead on Guatemala in the final friendly prior to the Gold Cup, it was gifted a reprieve.
DeAndre Yedlin's cross was headed into Guatemala's net by center back Carlos Castrillo for an own goal just minutes after Jozy Altidore had a penalty kick saved by Guatemala goalkeeper Paulo Motta, giving the Americans the 20th-minute lead at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
The speedy Yedlin, starting on the right wing as opposed to right back, had been played ahead by Michael Bradley. Active early, Yedlin placed a pinpoint ball to the center of the box, only to have Castrillo meet it. Unfortunately for him, he made a mess of the header, putting the U.S. on the board.
Altidore missed a chance to put the USA ahead after he had been pulled down in the box by Wilson Lalin when going for a Fabian Johnson cross. It would have been his third international goal of the year had he converted.
The USA, which went onto win 4-0 after goals from Timmy Chandler, Clint Dempsey and Chris Wondolowski, begins the Gold Cup on Tuesday, playing Honduras in Frisco, Texas.
