Bayern Munich and Manchester United have agreed to send longtime Bayern and German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger to Old Trafford, Manchester United announced Monday.

Manchester United signed Schweinsteiger to a three-year contract, the team announced.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bayern Munich, it has been an incredible journey and I didn't take the decision to leave lightly," Schweinsteigertold Manchester United's website. "Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Munich for. I feel ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as the most competitive league in the world and I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal again.

"I will never forget my time at Bayern Munich and I would like to thank everyone at the club and the fans for the great memories," Schweinsteiger added.

United's offer is reportedly a three-year deal worth roughly $217,000 per week for Schweinsteiger, with a transfer fee of approximately $23,276,250 according to The Guardian.

The 30-year-old has played for Bayern, one of the Bundesliga's top teams, for 13 seasons.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal coached Schweinsteiger at Bayern from 2009-2011.

"Bastian is, of course, no stranger to me. I worked with him during my time at Bayern Munich and I am truly delighted he is joining Manchester United. His record speaks for itself; he has won every honor at club level and was a major part of the successful Germany World Cup-winning team last summer," van Gaal said, according to the team's website.

Schweinsteiger would be the Red Devils' third major signing of the off-season. The team has brought in Dutch forward Memphis Depay and Italian defender Matteo Darmian.

Schweinsteiger was a member of the German national team that won the 2014 World Cup and is currently the captain of the national side.
