The U.S. men's national team is slated to take on Mexico at the Rose Bowl on Oct. 9 as part of qualifying for the 2017 Confederations Cup, and the American Outlaws fan group is crowdfunding money to send veterans to support the team.
The campaign began with a goal of $5,000, which it quickly surpassed, and raised to $15,000 with the intent of purchasing 10 rows of 25 seats each for members of the armed forces and their families.
The campaign recently surpassed the $15,000 mark thanks in large part to a $1,000 donation from USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann. The new goal is to try to purchase a whole section for veterans at the game.
The GoFundMe page estimates Mexico fans outnumbered U.S. supporters 20 to 1 when the rivals last played at the Rose Bowl in a 2011 Gold Cup match, and the American Outlaws hope to increase the pro-American presence at the game while also supplying veterans with tickets.
The 2017 Confederations Cup is set to be held in Russia, in many of the same venues that will be used for the 2018 World Cup.
