Bayern Munich pledges to aid refugees in Germany
Bayern Munich has pledged to “contribute financial, material and practical help” to the thousands of refugees streaming into Germany, the club announced Thursday.
The club said it will establish a “training camp” where young refugees will train with the club, “take German classes, and be provided with meals and football kit.” The team will also donate €1 million ($1.1 million) to refugee projects chosen in conjunction with local officials.
At the team’s next home match on Sept. 12, Bayern players will take the field “hand-in-hand with a German child and a refugee child as a mark of support for the integration of refugees.”
Millions of people have fled Syria amid the civil war there and hundreds of thousands more are fleeing Libya due to the presence of ISIS. Many of them are seeking asylum in Germany and other European Union nations.
