Report: Orlando City SC to announce NWSL expansion

Orlando City SC is close to expanding into the National Women's Soccer League, according toThe Guardian.

Citing unnamed sources, The Guardian reports that the NWSL is expected to name Orlando City SC an expansion team for 2016. NWSL commissioner Jeff Plush declined to confirm expansion candidates for 2016, but said that club owners would discuss expansion at their next meeting in Portland on Oct. 1.

The NWSL is considered the top tier of women’s professional soccer and currently fields nine teams.

Orlando City SC joined Major League Soccer as an expansion team this season, after formerly playing in the USL.

The Lions currently sit seventh in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, one spot behind the cutoff line for the playoffs starting on Oct. 28.
