LA Galaxy defender Robbie Rogers issued a statement Tuesday on the team’s partnership with fast food company Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A COO Dan Cathy made headlines in June 2012 when he made a series of comments publicly opposing same-sex marriage. The comments came after Cathy’s family-operated charity was found to have donated to organizations which were considered to be against LGBT causes.

Rogers is openly gay, having come out in February 2013. In his first match with the Galaxy in May 2013, Rogers became the first openly gay athlete to participate in a North American professional sport.

“Chick-Fil-A... I look forward to the day where I am not the only professional soccer player that addresses these issues in our league,“ Rogers wrote on Facebook. “I prefer my actions to speak rather than making statements but The LA Galaxy have been extremely supportive of me and my family. Although I don’t support or eat Chick-Fil-A, I do support my club and have since I was a young boy. Hopefully this partnership will be educational and the LA Galaxy, who are very inclusive and diverse, can have a positive influence on Chick-Fil-A.”

The Galaxy won their season opener against D.C. United on Sunday. LA next plays on March 12 against the Colorado Rapids.
