Report: Arsenal to give Zelalem first-team shot in summer

Arsenal reportedly has plans to give 19-year-old U.S. national team midfielder Gedion Zelalem every opportunity to make the club's first team this summer, according to The Telegraph

Zelalem has spent this season on loan at Rangers, but he will return to the Gunners upon season's end. He'll face a crowd at central midfield, even with the expected departures of Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini. The club is reportedly pursuing Borussia Monchengladbach's Granit Xhaka, as well.

Zelalem has played in 22 games for Rangers (17 starts), in helping the club in its quest for promotion to the Scottish Premier League. Zelalem has not scored for the club, and he missed nearly two months before returning on Saturday in a 10-minute stint off the bench. He was not part of the USA U-23 Olympic qualifying playoff against Colombia.

Zelalem has played for Arsenal's first team before, appearing off the bench in an FA Cup match and Champions League match in the last two seasons.

Rangers can earn automatic promotion on Tuesday against Dumbarton, which would be the culmination of a four-year climb from the bottom after the club fell into financial ruin.
