Giuseppe Rossi should have chosen to represent the United States instead of Italy internationally, his agent Andrea Pastorello told Radio Bruno.
“In hindsight, going back to when he chose between representing Italy or the USA, we should have chosen the USA,” Pastorello said.
The New Jersey native elected to play for Italy ahead of the 2006 World Cup when he turned down a spot in U.S. training camp. He did not make the 2006, 2010 or 2014 World Cup rosters for Italy. He has seven goals in his 30 games played for the Azzurri.
Rossi, 29, was not named to the Italian squad for Euro 2016. He missed the 2012 tournament due to injury.
Rossi has one year remaining on his contract in Fiorentina. Last season, he also played for Levante on loan and scored six goals in 17 games.
